In order to ensure students are using ethical behavior when researching online or adding information online, teachers should make sure students have and understand an Information Code of Ethics. Chapter 7 gives several ideas as to what a Code of Ethics should include. Information should be accurate and when deciding whether or not to use the information, individuals should test the accuracy of all the sources. Questioning the sources motives is also a way to determine if the information is valid and useful. Information should never cause harm or threaten to be harmful. Several other examples of ethical behavior are listed in Chapter 7 and it is important to understand and make known to students the importance of following such a Code when working online.
Currently I am not teaching however, chapter 7 lists 4 ways to rework AUP regarding 21 century tech. Goals should range through administration functions, classroom management and instructional objectives. Determine different uses of read/write Web applications tied to the goals listed previously. Make understood those activities and applications that will not be allowed as well as setting a code of ethics for information usage.
In order to make using technology safer for schools, schools should implement filters, provide faculty and student instruction on safety, provide parents with tips and information and purchase special search engines.
Teachers can follow five steps to avoid copyright infringement:
Create a code of ethics and set of procedures.
Review the policy.
Have someone that manages the log of licenses and registration materials.
Teach ethical and legal behavior.
