Inquiry Model and Lesson

The inquiry model I used can be found at http://virtualinquiry.com/inquiry/pathways.htm. This model is begins with:

Appreciation and Enjoyment: this stage is important as it helps to spark curiosity which helps to promote further research. It gets the person enthusiastic about the work ahead.

Presearch: Brainstorming is the key in this stage. It connects prior knowledge with the topic.

Search: Students research information found in a variety of resources.

Interpretation: Students evaluate the information to determine if it is relevant for their topic. This stage allows students to begin to use a critical eye when researching. They must determine which information is valid within the large amount of information found.

Communication: Students now must decide how to present the information they found.

Evaluation: This is ongoing throughout each stage. This can be individual or with peers. It is important for not only revisions but also as a way to find out what worked and what didn’t.

Students will explore idea of what it means to be a monster in society. They will research and define what a monster is. They will then read Beowolf and discuss their interpretations of the book. Students will then create a visual of their monster and present it.

The inquiry model will help them to organize their research and concept. Through research and inquiry, students will develop new ideas about what society sees as monsters. Students can then develop their own concepts and present those to the class. The lesson teaches students to interpret things differently and helps then to learn how to express their ideas to others.
